When investing in a new business website there are a number of considerations you need to look at. Most people who haven’t experienced developing a website forget, ignore or do not realise the complexity of certain areas until late on in the project, sometimes too late!
Things you need to think about
The website build – This consists of the actual code that goes into the website to make it function correctly and the way the site links together. There many cheap platforms that offer you a pre-built website but most of them are very restricted in their abilities. You need to think about what you want the site to do today AND in future to make sure the platform is flexible enough to grow with you so you don’t need to reinvest in another website in 12 months time.
The Design – Some cheap website platforms offer prebuilt templates that are restricting and can often look poor with limited branding. Your website is a marketing tool and should be built with your company brand in mind, as well as consider your site users to maximise your conversions. If you don’t have a professional looking logo you want the site designer to create a ‘brand’ for you, a template will never offer you this. It might be cheaper to use an off the shelf template in the short term but a site built around usability will massively increase your conversion rate, paying for its self in the long run.
Content – Many companies believe they can write their own site copy and some of them are right, but just because you understand what you are saying doesn’t mean your readers will. You need to sell your services and make your copy engaging to the user. A template doesn’t offer this so you either need to hire a copy writer or do it yourself but do you know how to write copy that sells, engages and appeals to both the users and the search engines?
Search Engine Optimisation – An area regularly missed out or ignored until the last minute. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) or Natural Search is the process of improving your site’s positions within the search engines, such as Google. The process filters into all of the above services, the copy needs to be written with search in mind, the design needs to include a site navigation that helps the search engines ‘crawl’ the site and the website build needs to be coded to maximise site visibility.
It is very difficult to find a company that can offer all this to a high standard and for a low enough price for a small business.
